GBA Project’s client Incitec Pivot Limited (ASX: IPL), a S&P/ASX Top 100 company, is a leading global company which manufactures, markets and distributes a range of industrial explosives, fertilisers, related products and services to customers around the world.

The Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) Mount Isa Acid Plant supplies Sulphuric Acid to the Phosphate Hill plant producing fertiliser and is the largest sulphuric acid plant of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Constructed in 1998 the plant collects, processes and transforms volatile copper smelter emissions, converting to the most used product in commercial manufacturing worldwide.

Typically on a two year maintenance cycle, the frequency of “cold” shutdowns/total plant outages is driven by the requirement to replenish catalyst. During this window, other significant maintenance is undertaken requiring the plant to be offline as well as capital project installations. The latest of IPL’s planned cold Turnarounds was executed in May/June 2014, with project commencement of planning and preparation in late 2012.

GBA Project’s Director Luke Betros was engaged by IPL at the project commencement and was responsible for Project Controls throughout the entire project lifecycle, planning, controlling and ultimately working collaboratively with the team to deliver a successful execution of the 30 day total plant outage. Working in the Sulphuric Acid Plant’s hazardous environment requires additional focus on safety with tasks and maintenance work unique to the type of plant. In such a hazardous, corrosive environment emergent works and scope control are key drivers for achieving a safe, on time and on budget execution of the turnaround. GBA’s execution team were responsible for the development and distribution of daily dashboard reporting, which was utilised to communicate daily progress to project stakeholders identifying and measuring key performance metrics in line with project and business objectives including Safety, Scope, Schedule, Cost and Reliability.

With 81% of the $26M AUD budget consumed within 5% of the project duration and a peak of 250 contractors on site, accurate and frequent performance metrics are essential to assisting the client in making informed decisions.

The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) is the longest-serving body for project management in Australia and recognises excellence in the field of project management with the annual Project Management Achievement Awards.

Turnaround Manager Luciano Leonforte, and Luke Betros put forward a submission for the successful planning and execution of Turnaround, and out of more than 30 submissions in 10 categories, were awarded the win in the Regional Projects category.

The submissions underwent rigorous assessment by a panel of independent project management experts against the global best practice methodologies set out by the Institute and Australian Standards. The difficulties and challenges experienced by the team throughout the turnaround were well documented and as part of IPL’s continual improvement process and continues to standardise turnaround process and procedures. GBA Projects continues to assist IPL to plan and execute Turnarounds within their plants and fixed assets as they continue to demonstrate success as an Industry Leader within their Turnaround activities.

This year, the Award ceremony was attended by over 230 guests from a wide range of sectors and industries across Australia, and was held in Brisbane on 20 August. Other award winners on the night included Queensland Police Service for G20 Project Group, Brisbane Airport and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

As a QLD winner, GBA will be attending the National Awards with IPL, which will be presented in Hobart, Tasmania in October.
