Planning for a business expansion? Often this will involve a steep learning curve when it comes to the new risks, costs and resources involved.

One of our clients, Crane Services Pty Ltd, is finding all of this out as it grows from a company hiring out cranes to a contractor taking on various project services.

The business operates a fleet of more than 50 cranes backed up by a fully qualified and competent team of supervisors, crane operators, riggers and support technicians.

Adelaide Oval’s redevelopment is among the high-profile projects that Crane Services has worked on across more than 40 years’ experience in the industry.

It’s no wonder, then, that all this hard work has led to the company seeking an expansion of its offerings – they’re onto a good thing here!

Earlier this year, Crane Services engaged fellow SA owned and operated business GBA Projects to provide project management services and help them grow from a company that hire out cranes to a contractor taking on various portions of a large-scale project.

This meant Crane Services needed to plan for and accept the risks associated with the lump sum, fixed fee contracts – such as time, cost and resources – that come with big projects.

Proper planning and mitigation of these risks becomes vital, which is why we’re helping to build up the company's capabilities until they can eventually manage all projects in-house.

Having recently won several new contracts, Crane Services has been on a steep learning curve and has benefited from the full range of project management services being provided by GBA Projects.

One of these new contracts is the Torrens to Torrens project, for which Crane Services has been engaged to provide plant, equipment and labour resources to the main contractor installing precast panels.

Fittingly GBA Projects is also working on T2T and is providing contract administration and planning and scheduling services to the project team. This includes day-to-day scheduling of the work with a focus on planning works around a very large and busy site.

As a fellow SA owned and operated business, we’re thrilled to be helping Crane Services with its expansion while also working alongside the company on such an important project for the state’s transport network.

Crane Services is one of the many local businesses we’ve helped reach new heights for quality project delivery across more than 30 years in the industry.

After all, it’s a cliché for a reason – fail to plan and plan to fail!
