We sat down with our scheduler Irene Ling to learn about her experiences with our company having relocated from Malaysia.

1. Where were you born, and where did you grow up?

I’m from Malaysia, which is composed of two regions – West Malaysia and East Malaysia. The capital is Kuala Lumpur.

I was born in Sibu in East Malaysia and my family moved to nearby Miri when I was still a baby.

2. How did you get into project control work?

I studied Chemical Engineering at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, and was involved more with process work for the first few years of my career.

I was a junior engineer for Malaysian oil and gas service provider Petra Resources Sdn Bhd, where I was part of a planning team and was also responsible for closing projects.

I received training in P3 and P6 (scheduling and levelling) and later coached these qualifications to a new graduate.

To continue my project management career path, I utilised my technical and process knowledge to work at Shell.

3. Why did you move from Malaysia to Australia, and why Adelaide?

I was attracted to Australia’s positive environment for life, education and career. I moved to Adelaide after accepting an offer from project management consultancy GBA Projects in March 2017. My first project was the SCM17 Shutdown (smelter campaign maintenance) at BHP Olympic Dam.

4. What’s been your favourite part of working with GBA Projects so far?

A highlight of my work for GBA Projects so far was the Olympic Dam smelter shutdown. It was a tough campaign, but team work saw us get through it successfully.

I enjoy the challenging environment and developing and using my project management soft skills. It’s a great team to work with – everyone is dynamic, encouraging and supportive.

5. What has been your greatest achievement in your career?

I would again have to say the SCM17 campaign – being able to cope with the difficulties and challenging environment to handle this huge shutdown.

Other achievements in my career so far include working in a different country, bonding with my fellow team members and successfully delivering projects to clients’ expectations.

6. Why do you like working at GBA Projects?

GBA Projects boasts a high quality of project management and provides training to employees so that they’re ready for challenging tasks.

The business has a great reputation for providing a great service and project delivery to its clients, and professional relationships are built on trust and commitment.

Our boss Matt looks after his employees and values their performance and effort. We have a great workplace culture in which I’m able to perform well and deliver the best results possible.
