2009 was a special year for the business as we decided to re-brand. Up until 2009, GBA Projects had flown by the name of G G Betros & Associates, a small family owned business with many close relationships to other similar businesses in Australia. Our company name change came at a time where we decided to focus on ourselves and reinvent who we were on a national stage.

There are two key things about our name that are key to understanding why we renamed ourselves the way we did:

  1. the "GBA" is short for G G Betros and Associates - which retains our history, experience, results and achievements
  2. the GBA is in fact typically shown in red font, which draws the eye towards it, so that we never forget point (1)

But 2009 was not just a year to remember in terms of the name and culture of the business.

As most small business owners appreciate, we often rely on word-of-mouth to meet new people and source fresh opportunities. our year in 2009 was such a year where one phone call from a past client changed the company dynamic for the next 5 years.

2009 was still a busy year with many projects on the go. We continued to provide project controls services to ElectraNet's Adelaide Central Reinforcement (ACR) Project as well as some larger scale projects within the CAPEX portfolio which included:

  • Tungkillo Substation - Stage 1
  • Cherry Gdns Aged Asset Replacement
  • Whyalla-Pt Lincoln 132kV Line Uprating
  • Clare North New 132_33kV Substation
  • Davenport 50MVar Reactor Installation
  • Penola West New 132_33kV Substation
  • Cherry Gdns MVE 275kV Line Uprating
  • Eyre Peninsula Voltage Control
  • Whyalla to Mt Karia Radio Bearer
  • Fleurieu Peninsula Reinfrocement

2009 saw us take on some new clients such as Hawkins Construction, Kyren and Surf Life Saving SA. That year, Rail Plus, a JV that had formed to tender for the Adelaide Rail Electrification Project, engaged us to assist them in preparing their tender bid for the project.

We also provided some support to Russell & Yelland architects on a few proposal and assisted Candetti Construction on a few tenders.

We had earlier been engaged in 1992 to develop the Precast modular system for Constress which was a successful system based on the Open Plan software package. We were contacted by Constress' former CEO to provide a more up-to-date version of the algorithms for a project in Abu Dhabi. The project didn't take off for our team back here in Adelaide, however it was one example of how a phone call can come back to haunt you in a good way!

The ever successful Alcidion Corporation engaged us to provide project board reporting solutions for their portfolio of health care oreinted systems. In order to achieve this, we had to develop a suite of Microsoft Project / Excel automated reports to extract time and cost data.

However it was late November of 2009 where the company was about to launch into a major undertaking. As the family was sitting around the dinner table one night the phone rang. It was a young engineer from a Singapore based firm Sembawang Engineers who was seeking a proposal to provide dispute resolution services for three extension of time claims. Our name had been put forward by several ex-colleagues who had worked with Greg and David in Hong Kong and there was a sense of urgency around getting started.

Little did we know what was to come...
