The start of the last decade of the millennium provided the opportunity for GBA Projects to get involved with ASC on the Design and Construction of the Collins Class Submarines, an association which lasted until the end of 1993 when the Collins Submarine was officially launched on time.

Planning team in front of the first submarineASC had to be C/SCSC or “CS-squared” compliant to build the Collins Class Submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. The schedules / programmes for the various stages and components were set up using PROJECT/2 and consisted of around 5 separate un-integrated programmes that where updated monthly. This meant that dates from one programme were transferred and input into the subsequent programme manually. While this scenario was not ideal it worked for a number of years until it became too unweildy to manage.

Due to his expertise in PROJECT/2 Greg was called in by the ASC to upgrade and integrate these schedules into sub-projects of one programme so that they could be updated automatically without any manual transfer of data between the subprojects.

In order for this integration to be successful Greg needed to understand the inter-relationships of each programme and then to establish a set of standards for Activity Identifiers, Codes and Calendars. These were tested over a period of several months on duplicate data to ensure that the standards met the requirements of each programme and approved by the various department heads.

One major consideration was integration of detail data being used planned and scheduled on Mac PC’s using Micro Planner XPert. The alignment of data between the two platforms that is the Main Frame and the Macintosh PC’s was essential to the conversion.

Once approval was granted after several months of planning and testing on non-live duplicate data the PROJECT/2 commands where submitted late one evening and by the morning of the next day an integrated programme with 5 subprojects was in place which was used over the next decade to successfully build the Collins Class Submarines.
